Supporting Hongkongers: Why I Started My Online GP Service

ree

In recent years, the UK has welcomed many new families and individuals from Hong Kong. Like many others, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting new friends during this time and offering support—especially around something as important as their health.

For many of the new arrivals, adjusting to the NHS has been a significant change. From the process of booking appointments to being referred to specialists, there are many differences compared to the healthcare system they were used to. Add to that the challenges of a new culture and language, and it’s easy to see how overwhelming it can feel.

During my maternity leave in 2023, a close friend pointed out that, with my medical background and bilingual abilities, I could offer something truly valuable to the BNO community—and that’s how this online GP service was born.

A More Personal Approach to Care

Through this service, I’ve been able to offer a kind of care that reflects what I always wished I had more time for in the NHS: time to truly listen, to follow up personally, and to provide reassurance—especially in a familiar language. I’ve seen first-hand how speaking to someone in your own language brings comfort, clarity, and confidence, particularly when it comes to something as personal as your health.

Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of consulting patients of all ages and for a wide range of health concerns. From skin conditions and sinus infections to more serious medical issues like stroke symptoms and acute illnesses requiring hospital care, I’ve been able to provide support when it’s most needed. I’ve also assisted visiting family members with urgent prescriptions or illnesses, supported patients struggling with mental health and menopause, and even helped communicate with their NHS GPs to bridge language gaps.

Another valuable service I offer is verifying health declarations for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), something that many BNOs find helpful in their professional journey here in the UK.

A Bit About Me

I was born in Hong Kong and emigrated before finishing primary school. Our family moved to the Netherlands, where I studied at an international school, and eventually settled in the UK. I completed my medical degree at Southampton University and now work as a fully qualified GP. I’m also a mum to three wonderful children.

For the past 13 years, I’ve worked in various healthcare settings—hospitals, urgent care centres, hospices, and GP surgeries. What I love most about being a GP is the chance to really get to know my patients. Every person has a unique story and reason for seeking help. No two consultations are ever the same, and I learn so much from each and every one.

Here to Support You – In Cantonese and English

As someone who understands both the UK healthcare system and the cultural background of the Hong Kong community, my aim is to continue offering care that feels personal, respectful, and accessible. Being able to speak both Cantonese and English allows me to bridge the gap for patients who may feel uncertain or overwhelmed navigating a new system.

The response so far has been truly encouraging, and it means so much to know that this service is making a positive impact. I’m honoured to support individuals and families during what can be a challenging transition—and I’m committed to being here for you every step of the way.

Whether it’s for yourself, a family member, or a friend, if you’re looking for a GP who understands your journey and speaks your language, I’d be happy to help.
